What's tested

Biomarkers Included:
  • C-Telopeptide (Serum CTx): This test measures a fragment of type I collagen released into the bloodstream when bone is broken down. It serves as a marker of bone resorption, helping clinicians assess the rate of bone turnover. Elevated levels can indicate increased bone loss, as seen in conditions like osteoporosis.
  • Intact N-Terminal Propeptide of Type 1 Procollagen (P1NP): This test quantifies a byproduct released during the formation of type I collagen, which is a major component of bone. As a marker of bone formation, P1NP provides insights into how actively new bone is being created. Its measurement is useful for monitoring bone health and response to treatments affecting bone metabolism.
Why should I test for bone turnover markers?

Traditional bone density scans show the amount of bone present, but they do not measure how actively bone is being broken down or rebuilt. Testing bone turnover markers like CTx and P1NP helps identify imbalances in bone metabolism, allowing for earlier detection of bone loss and more personalized treatment strategies.

Who should consider this panel?

This test is beneficial for postmenopausal women, individuals at risk for osteoporosis, athletes with high-impact training, and those with conditions that affect bone metabolism, such as hyperparathyroidism or chronic inflammatory diseases. It provides valuable insight into bone turnover and overall skeletal health.

How does this test complement a bone density scan (DEXA)?

While DEXA scans measure overall bone mass, bone turnover markers provide insight into ongoing bone remodeling. This allows for a more proactive approach to bone health, tracking response to treatments and identifying potential concerns before significant bone loss occurs.

Whereas DEXA scans capture bone mass like a still photograph, bone turnover markers act as a real-time dashboard, revealing ongoing bone breakdown and formation.

More about this lab panel

Why consider this panel?

Bone loss is often silent until fractures or structural weakness develop, making early detection essential. This test measures bone turnover markers to assess the balance between bone breakdown and formation, offering a dynamic view of skeletal health. It is particularly valuable for postmenopausal women, individuals at risk for osteoporosis, athletes, and those with metabolic or inflammatory conditions affecting bone integrity. By identifying imbalances early, this test supports targeted interventions to preserve bone strength and prevent long-term complications.

Does Marek Diagnostics accept insurance?

Marek Diagnostics is a cash-pay service. Our platform offers direct access to comprehensive testing without the limitations, denials, or delays imposed by insurance companies. If traditional insurance covered the kind of proactive, high-quality lab work we offer, Marek Diagnostics wouldn’t need to exist.

However, many clients successfully use their HSA/FSA to cover their testing costs. Marek Diagnostics is partnered with TrueMed for convenient deployment of HSA/FSA funds at checkout.

My panel Meets Treatment Requirements — what does that mean?

Marek Diagnostics is an extension of Marek Health, the leading health optimization platform designed to turn your results into informed action.

If your panel Meets Treatment Requirements, you’re eligible to enroll into Guided Optimization, an exclusive program that connects you with:

  • Detailed, expert led lab analysis
  • A consultation with a Marek Health coach and board-certified medical provider
  • A precision health optimization plan
  • Access to high-quality treatment options

If you’re unsure what to do with your results, Marek Health is the bridge between lab results and achieving your goals.

Do I need to pay a separate fee at the lab to get my blood drawn?

No additional payment is required at the lab. Our expert-built panels include the venipuncture and if you’re building a custom panel or testing biomarkers individually, a $5 venipuncture fee will be automatically added at checkout.
