Aluminum, Plasma/Serum
Aluminum, Plasma/Serum
Diagnostic Blood Test:
- Aluminum, Plasma/Serum
This blood test measures the concentration of aluminum in the blood, providing critical information about an individual’s exposure to this metal. Aluminium can be toxic at elevated levels. Under normal circumstances, the body efficiently limits aluminum absorption, and plasma/serum levels remain low. However, increased aluminum levels can occur due to excessive environmental exposure, ingestion of contaminated water or medications, prolonged use of aluminum-containing antacids, or impaired kidney function, which hinders the body’s ability to eliminate aluminum effectively.
Elevated Aluminum, Plasma/Serum levels are associated with several health concerns, including neurotoxicity, which may manifest as cognitive impairment or neurological disorders. High aluminum concentrations can also contribute to anemia by interfering with iron metabolism and may lead to bone diseases such as osteomalacia, where bone mineralization is impaired. Additionally, individuals undergoing long-term hemodialysis or receiving parenteral nutrition are at higher risk of aluminum accumulation and toxicity.
