Cortisol is the 'stress hormone' that helps your body respond to short- or long-term stress and trauma. Cortisol plays important roles in immune function and plays a role in controlling metabolism. Abnormal cortisol levels may be a sign of a tumor or of adrenal gland problems such as Cushing’s syndrome or Addison's disease. Prolonged elevation of cortisol can cause fatigue, immune dysfunction, and negatively impact sex hormones.
